Springfield's Haitian community collapses after TPS revocation and ICE raids

The loss of temporary protected status for Haitians has led to mass arrests, business closures and a wave of departures in Springfield, Ohio.

When DHS revoked temporary protected status for Haitian migrants, Springfield, Ohio - home to up to 20,000 Haitians - experienced a rapid community collapse. The Haitian Support Center reported fewer arrivals, while ICE began arresting hundreds, installing ankle monitors on youths and even pregnant women. Businesses such as auto repair shops and the newly opened Lantern Bar now operate behind locked gates and with limited customers, fearing raids.

Deportation flights to Haiti have risen, yet the destination remains unsafe, with recent gang massacres and FAA bans on flights to Port-au-Prince. Residents are converting cash, abandoning bank accounts, and many are leaving for Canada, Mexico or back to Haiti, leaving the town eerily empty.

Why it matters

It shows how abrupt immigration policy changes can devastate a local community's economy and safety.
