Star Ferry fares to increase up to HK$1.80 per ride from late January
Hong Kong's Executive Council approved fare hikes for Star Ferry, adding as much as HK$1.80 to weekday and weekend trips starting Jan. 25.
Hong Kong's Executive Council gave the green light to a new fare structure for the historic Star Ferry, effective Jan. 25. Weekday tickets will rise between HK$0.60 and HK$1, while weekend and public-holiday trips will see increases of HK$1 to HK$1.80, with adult fare caps of HK$6 and HK$8.30 respectively. The price of monthly passes will not change, staying at HK$190.
The changes apply to both the Central-Tsim Sha Tsui and Wan Chai-Tsim Sha Tsui crossings of Victoria Harbour. Officials highlighted that the 138-year-old operator recorded accumulated losses exceeding HK$100 million between 2018 and 2023 and relies on debt financing. Although the ferry posted marginal profits in 2024-2025, it is expected to face losses again from 2026 due to stagnant ridership and rising costs. Despite the hike, Star Ferry will remain the most affordable harbour crossing, costing roughly 30-50 % less than MTR or franchised bus fares.
Why it matters
The fare increase affects daily commuters and reflects the government's effort to keep the historic ferry service financially viable.
