Starbucks CEO Niccol Revives Sales but Margin Pressure Persists Amid Costly Overhaul

Brian Niccol's two-year tenure has lifted Starbucks sales through store upgrades and staffing, yet the costly turnaround has squeezed profit margins.

Brian Niccol marked his two-year anniversary as Starbucks chief by steering the chain out of three consecutive quarters of falling comparable sales, delivering a 7.9% increase in the fiscal third quarter and a fourth straight growth period. Drawing on his Chipotle experience, he prioritized hiring additional baristas, shortening wait times, and refurbishing locations to recapture the classic coffeehouse ambiance, while boosting visibility through placements such as the film “The Devil Wears Prada 2.”

These initiatives have required at least $500 million in labor outlays, pushing operating margins to 12.9% versus 15.8% two years prior and cutting North American margins from 21% to 13.6%. Starbucks has also shuttered hundreds of stores, including its Seattle roastery, and granted executives stock awards linked to cost-reduction goals through 2027. Ongoing challenges include an unsettled U.S. barista union contract, a recent boycott, and the scrapping of an AI inventory system, though investors remain cautiously optimistic.
