Starbucks CEO says superior service and quality will keep shoppers spending

Starbucks chief Brian Niccol says the chain’s focus on world-class service and craft coffee will sustain sales despite inflation.

Brian Niccol, approaching the two-year mark at the helm of Starbucks, maintains that the company’s emphasis on exceptional service and premium coffee will protect it from reduced consumer spending caused by inflation. His “Back to Starbucks” plan seeks to revive the brand’s role as a welcoming “third space,” encouraging patrons to linger and interact with baristas through gestures such as handwritten notes. The strategy also involves streamlining menus and adding automation to give staff more face-time with guests.

Financial data released in July revealed a 7.9% increase in global comparable sales and a 3.5% rise in average ticket size, indicating customers are willing to pay more. Net revenue of $9.3 billion fell 1% but beat forecasts, and the stock has risen about 24% year-to-date. In April, Starbucks rolled out a performance-based bonus that can reach $1,200 annually for baristas who exceed sales and service targets.
