Startup claims AI designed a custom chip in just two weeks

Architect Labs says its AI system created and verified a chip named Redwood in a fortnight, a task that normally takes a year or more.

Architect Labs, a fledgling startup launched last year, announced that its artificial-intelligence platform designed and verified a custom processor called Redwood in only two weeks, with two human chip architects directing the high-level architecture. The rapid turnaround contrasts with conventional projects that often exceed a year, involve teams of roughly 100 specialists, and cost hundreds of millions of dollars. The venture raised $24 million in seed funding, led by Kindred Ventures and supported by figures such as Jeff Dean and executives from OpenAI and Nvidia.

Redwood has been tested on a field-programmable gate array, showing potential efficiency gains over Nvidia's Jetson Orin Nano, though it has not yet been fabricated. Architect Labs intends to submit the design to Taiwan's TSMC for production, while researchers caution that AI-driven design still requires rigorous human verification to avoid costly errors. The company envisions a future where AI can iteratively improve its own hardware designs, reducing the need for large design teams.
