States face September deadline to join federal Medicaid drug pricing program

States must decide by Sept. 30 whether to participate in a federal initiative that would extend "most-favored-nation" drug prices to their Medicaid programs.

A federal program offering "most-favored-nation" pricing for Medicaid drugs is open for state enrollment, with a deadline of Sept. 30. Participating states would receive the lowest negotiated prices that the federal government secures for its own purchases. Officials note that the move could lower prescription costs for Medicaid beneficiaries. States that opt out will continue with their existing pricing arrangements. The deadline applies to all states that have not yet made a choice.

Why it matters

State choices on the Medicaid pricing program will affect drug costs for millions of low-income patients.
