Stellantis workers start vote on strike authorization amid stalled talks

Canadian Stellantis employees began a two-day ballot to decide whether to grant their union a strike mandate as collective-bargaining talks remain at an impasse.

Stellantis workers across Canada started a two-day voting process to determine if their union, Unifor, should receive a strike mandate, as negotiations over a new contract have stalled. Unifor plans to release the outcome on Monday and stresses that a work stoppage would only be considered if talks fail to produce an agreement. The dispute intensified after Stellantis revealed its intention to sell the idled Brampton, Ontario plant to defence firm Roshel, citing unfavorable market and trade conditions that made keeping the facility uneconomical.

More than 2,000 workers were laid off when the plant ceased operations in 2023, and production of the Jeep Compass was shifted to Illinois. Stellantis argues the sale could eventually create new jobs in the region, but the union remains skeptical and continues to press for better terms.

Why it matters

The vote could trigger a major strike that would affect Stellantis' North American production and thousands of workers.
