Stephen Walt says Trump’s tactics leave the Iran conflict at a deadlock

Harvard professor Stephen Walt argues that President Donald Trump’s unpredictable approach is weakening the U.S. stance in the Iran war, leaving both sides in a stagnant stalemate.

In a discussion with host Steve Clemons, Stephen Walt contended that Trump’s promises to bolster America are undermined by policies that erode its leverage over Iran. He noted that Tehran has little reason to trust any statements from Trump, resulting in a “hurting stalemate” where neither side wishes to intensify fighting. Walt also expressed skepticism about any breakthrough in the Palestinian-Israeli issue, citing a lack of U.S. pressure on Israel and a persistent “Greater Israel” mindset.

Why it matters

The analysis warns that U.S. policy may be prolonging conflict and limiting diplomatic progress in the Middle East.
