CROSS-SPECTRUM

Stockholm real-estate firm recorded employee with hidden video and audio devices

A long-time finance employee at a Stockholm property company discovered over a thousand video and audio files of her conversations stored by the firm’s camera system.

The employee, who has been with the firm for ten years, found that the workplace surveillance system had saved 1 208 recordings containing talks with her boss, tenants and suppliers, as well as private discussions. The employer confirmed the equipment’s presence but blamed a technical error, insisting there was no intent to spy on the worker. A union claims the action violates EU data-protection rules and constitutes a serious invasion of privacy.

Why it matters

It raises serious questions about employee privacy and compliance with EU data-protection laws.
