Stockholm regional coalition deadlock may be settled by lottery tie-break
Centern seeks a centre-right coalition in Stockholm region, but recent withdrawals have left the balance of power uncertain, potentially requiring a lottery to choose the new council chair.
Centern positions itself as a kingmaker in Stockholm’s regional politics, ready to pit the Social Democrats against the Moderates while favouring a coalition that includes C, S, MP, KD and L. The party’s leader Michaela Haga stressed the importance of delivering shorter queues, better health centres and stronger public transport. However, the withdrawal of both the Social Democrats and Christian Democrats from talks this week has jeopardised the centre-middle formula, making relationship repair the top priority for Centern over the weekend.
Miljöpartiet’s Jakop Dalunde publicly rejected participation in a right-leaning government, warning it would undermine voter confidence and could push the party into opposition. Finance council member Aida Hadzialic called for an inclusive approach to ensure stable governance, adequate health-care financing and more staff. With no agreement expected by Tuesday, the regional council must elect a new chair, and if votes split evenly, the municipal code mandates a lottery to determine the outcome.
Why it matters
The outcome will shape health-care and transport policy for millions in Stockholm region.
