Stolen driver dies after head-on collisions on Melbourne streets

A 46-year-old man who had stolen two cars died after a series of crashes in Melbourne, police said.

Police reported that a 46-year-old man from Melton stole a white Subaru from Glen Iris on August 20 and was later seen traveling on the wrong side of the road near Punt Road and Boulton Parade in Melbourne. After colliding with two other vehicles, he exited the Subaru and climbed into a Mustang involved in the crash, whose driver was not present at the time. He then maneuvered the Mustang onto Barassi Way in East Melbourne, where it struck a Range Rover and a Toyota Camry in a head-on collision, causing him to be thrown from the vehicle and die at the scene.

The woman driving the Range Rover sustained an arm injury and was hospitalized; the other motorists escaped injury. Brunton Avenue was closed while investigators examined the site, and police are seeking witnesses or dash-cam footage through Crime Stoppers.
