Storm-Ravaged Nova Scotia Declares Local Emergencies as Roads and Power Fail

Record rainfall across Nova Scotia’s Cape Breton region triggered widespread flooding, road washouts and a massive power outage affecting more than 38,000 customers. In Richmond County, a culvert burst early Saturday, isolating the Bras d’Or Lakes Inn and a wedding venue, though the ceremony continued with limited staff. Nearby vacation-rental owners reported similar damage, and in Guysborough County two culverts collapsed, leaving 86-year-old Raymond Morris and his wife stranded with limited mobility.
Local authorities, including MLAs Trevor Boudreau, Amanda Mombourquette, Greg Morrow and fire-department volunteers, declared a state of local emergency in Inverness, Richmond and Victoria counties and are coordinating temporary road fixes once waters recede. Warden Lois Landry warned residents to avoid travel and check on neighbours, while meteorologists forecast additional rain but easing winds on Sunday.
