Stortinget to sell eleven commuter apartments on open market

The Norwegian parliament announced that eleven of its commuter homes will be placed on the open market, expecting to generate revenue.

Stortinget plans to put eleven commuter apartments on the market, a move linked to the 2021 controversy over free housing for some parliamentarians. The parliament now holds 143 commuter homes, including 11 share apartments, and has not conducted any transactions since 2014. The real-estate assignment has been listed on Doffin, allowing a contract value of up to 3.5 million kroner for the successful tenderer.

Terje Olsen, head of the property and service division, said a broker will be selected in November, after which the properties will be prepared, advertised, shown to potential buyers and offered for bids. Officials note that interest in commuter housing appears largely unchanged after the 2021 revelations. While housing prices in Norway have risen sharply in recent years, the exact profit from the sales remains unknown.

Why it matters

Selling the apartments could recoup funds for the parliament and address past misuse of its housing assets.
