Stroke Survivor Launches AI-Driven Smart Ring Startup After $75 Million Funding

Dustin Freckleton, who survived a stroke at 24, founded Happy Health, which raised $75 million to market an AI-powered smart ring for rapid sleep-apnea diagnosis.

Dustin Freckleton experienced a stroke during his first year of medical school, later discovering he also suffered from sleep apnea and atrial fibrillation. These health challenges inspired him to launch Happy Health, a venture that builds an AI-enabled smart ring designed to diagnose sleep apnea quickly. The company announced its emergence from stealth after raising a total of $75 million across several rounds since 2019, with backing from ARCH Venture Partners and OpenLoop, both of which remain investors following milestones such as manufacturing, clinical validation, and FDA clearance.

Happy Health reports that tens of thousands of individuals have used its platform, which captures biometric sleep data, analyzes it with AI, and connects patients to a network of doctors who can prescribe treatments like CPAP machines. The complete package—ring, one-year tracking, and physician visits—costs $396 out of pocket and is frequently covered by insurers. Freckleton envisions expanding the ring’s capabilities to monitor additional conditions, choosing sleep apnea as the initial focus because it is often undiagnosed and linked to serious chronic diseases.

Why it matters

The startup could speed up detection and treatment of sleep apnea, a common but underdiagnosed condition linked to serious health risks.
