Strong winds and heavy rain leave around 18,000 homes without electricity in southwest Ireland
Heavy rain and gusty southeasterly winds knocked out power for roughly 18,000 homes, farms and businesses across Cork, Limerick and Tipperary.
A night of intense southeasterly winds and heavy rain triggered yellow weather alerts across parts of Ireland, with Met Éireann warning of wave overtopping, coastal flooding and falling trees. The conditions caused widespread disruption, including blocked roads and damaged power lines. ESB confirmed that about 18,000 homes, farms and businesses, primarily in the west and southwest, lost electricity, with over 1,700 properties affected in Macroom, Co Cork, and more than 1,300 in Garryspillane, Co Limerick.
Emergency crews have been working since first light to clear debris and restore power. Officials advise the public to avoid live wires and to report damage by calling the provided hotline. Most customers are expected to have electricity restored by the evening.
