Strong winds drive multiple bushfires across New Zealand as crews battle blazes

High winds are intensifying several bushfires in New Zealand, prompting evacuations and a large deployment of firefighters, helicopters and military personnel.

A weather system moving across New Zealand has produced strong wind warnings for Marlborough, Wellington and the Wairarapa, while heavy rain alerts have lifted in the Grey and Buller districts. MetService meteorologist Devlin Lynden noted that temperatures are set to fall and wind directions will shift. The winds have fanned flames in several separate fires: a live-fire training blaze in the Waiouru military zone has scorched more than 230 hectares and may continue burning into Tuesday evening, drawing nine firefighting crews and five helicopters.

In central Otago’s Roxburgh, six households were evacuated, over 30 homes lost power and at least seven crews are battling a fire that started in trees on Monday afternoon. A scrub fire of about 80 hectares in Southland, ignited on Sunday, remains difficult to access due to high winds and rugged terrain, with additional volunteers and Department of Conservation staff scheduled for Tuesday.

Why it matters

The fires threaten homes, infrastructure and military training areas, highlighting the danger of extreme weather combined with wildfire risk.
