Structured Exercise Linked to Longer Survival and Lower Recurrence in Cancer Patients
A new review finds that cancer patients who follow a regular exercise program alongside treatment have a reduced risk of death and disease recurrence.
A comprehensive review of 21 international trials, covering over 8,400 adults aged 47 to 64 with common cancers, indicates that integrating structured physical activity into standard cancer care can improve survival outcomes. Participants who adhered to at least 70% of an exercise program experienced a 23% reduction in overall mortality and a 17% decrease in cancer-specific death, as well as a 17% lower chance of recurrence before death.
The advantage was most evident when aerobic exercise was paired with resistance training; resistance work alone did not produce a significant benefit. Researchers suggest these effects stem from distinct biological adaptations triggered by combined training. The findings, published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, argue that exercise should be considered a therapeutic adjunct rather than merely a quality-of-life measure. Cancer advocacy leaders emphasized the need for accessible activity support and professional guidance for patients.
