Student home in Glassboro swamped as floodwaters smash through glass doors
On Aug. 27, flash floods in Glassboro, New Jersey forced a glass door to burst open in an off-campus student house, flooding four lower-level bedrooms.
Heavy rain on Aug. 27 caused flash flooding in the Glassboro area, with the National Weather Service recording between four and six inches of precipitation. Rowan University alerted the community to dangerous conditions, noting that water had also entered campus buildings. In an off-campus house, students attempted to block rising water with towels and laundry, but several feet of floodwater forced a glass door to break, hurling a panel into the interior.
The surge inundated the lower level, fully submerging four bedrooms, furniture, beds and rugs. Resident Tommy Scirrotto described the damage in a GoFundMe post, sharing images of the wreckage and seeking assistance.
Why it matters
The incident highlights how sudden flash floods can quickly damage housing and disrupt students during the start of the academic year.
