Student housing crisis and Satya Niketan tragedy dominate upcoming DUSU election

The fatal collapse of a South Delhi student residence on September 6, which claimed five lives, has turned into a unifying campaign theme for the Delhi University Students’ Union election slated for September 18. Over half of the university’s 251,474 enrolled students are estimated to require hostel space, yet the university provides only 7,224 official beds, forcing many into cramped, unsafe private rooms like those at Satya Niketan.

The ABVP, aligned with the ruling party, will extend its "Aakhir Kab Tak?" and "No more Satya Niketan.in" campaigns, demanding more hostels, rent control, an audit of student housing and the resignation of the MCD commissioner. The NSUI, linked to the opposition, promises a manifesto covering affordable accommodation, infrastructure upgrades, safety measures and a ₹1 crore compensation package for victims’ families. The left-wing AISA-SFI alliance will also prioritize hostel expansion, safety audits of private PGs and a rent-control law, while continuing its broader student-movement agenda. Candidate lists have been announced for all four central DUSU posts, and university proctor Manoj Kumar Singh warned that stricter oversight will begin as the poll approaches.
