Student Killed by Settler Gunfire Highlights Daily Perils of West Bank Schools

In al-Mughayyir, a Palestinian village near Ramallah, a 14-year-old student named Aws was shot dead by Israeli settler fire on school grounds, and the teacher’s brother was also killed the same day.

The tragedy occurred as children in al-Mughayyir had to pass Israeli soldiers just to reach their classrooms. On 21 April, settler gunfire struck the schoolyard, killing Aws and later his teacher’s brother, who arrived to help. The incident underscores how violence has already claimed multiple children in the village this year, reflecting a broader pattern across the occupied West Bank where education is shadowed by conflict.

Why it matters

It shows how the Israeli-Palestinian conflict directly endangers children’s right to education.
