Student Protesters Detained After Occupying OpenAI Lobby in Washington, D.C.

On a Monday afternoon, student activists gathered inside the Gallup Building in Washington, D.C., occupying the lobby of OpenAI’s public lobbying office and displaying a large “Stop Stealing Our Future” banner alongside signs alleging the firm has purchased senators. The demonstration lasted about two hours before Metropolitan Police entered the space and arrested thirteen people for unlawful entry, distributing them among the First, Second, and Third District stations for processing.

The protest was coordinated by the climate group Sunrise Movement and the anti-AI organization QuitGPT, which described the action as one of more than twenty-state efforts in August to pressure politicians to “Dump Big Tech.” Student organizer Raya Gupta said participants risked arrest to highlight concerns over job security, clean water, and political influence tied to AI firms. The incident adds to a series of AI-related arrests across the United States, occurring amid growing public unease and continued bipartisan acceptance of tech lobbying. OpenAI’s newly opened Washington office is linked to a super PAC that has contributed over $140 million toward upcoming midterm elections, aiming to shape AI regulation.
