Student's football helmet hides two-foot cottonmouth during practice
During a Maumelle High School football practice in Arkansas, a player discovered a venomous cottonmouth snake slithering inside his helmet, prompting staff to secure the helmet and call animal services.
While practicing football at Maumelle High School in Arkansas, a player sensed something unusual in his helmet and found a two-foot cottonmouth snake concealed under the padding. One outlet Director Kirk Horton said the discovery left the coaching staff stunned, likening the odds to winning the lottery. The helmet was quickly sealed in a tote bag, and Maumelle Animal Services responded, immersing the helmet in a sink to encourage the snake to emerge.
Director Chris Davis explained that cottonmouths rank as the second most venomous snakes in the state and favor dark, sheltered spots, making the helmet an unexpected refuge. After safely extracting the animal, officials relocated it to a wooded area distant from the campus. The incident highlighted the rarity of such encounters and prompted safety reviews at the school.
