Student sues Washington high school over alleged assault by transgender wrestler and policy
A female wrestler who says she was sexually assaulted by a transgender-identifying opponent has filed a lawsuit to halt the school’s gender-inclusion policy.
A student from Rogers High School in Puyallup, Washington, claims she was sexually assaulted by a transgender-identifying male wrestler during a December 2025 match and was never informed of his gender identity beforehand. The lawsuit, brought by the Alliance Defending Freedom, asks a court to stop the district from permitting biological males to compete against female athletes and to require parental notification. According to the filing, the opponent digitally penetrated the victim’s vagina, an act the family describes as assault.
Pierce County prosecutors declined to pursue criminal charges, citing insufficient evidence, while the school’s principal and one outlet director are accused of violating mandatory-reporter laws by delaying notification to law enforcement for two months. District officials contend they acted on the information available at the time and launched an investigation once the incident became public. The case highlights ongoing disputes over transgender participation policies in school sports.
Why it matters
The lawsuit challenges school policies on transgender athletes and raises questions about student safety and reporting obligations.
