Student suicides hit record high with 243 deaths, study shows

A recent education ministry analysis found 243 primary and secondary students died by suicide, the highest number recorded.

The ministry's report examined 242 case files and revealed that 243 students took their own lives, surpassing all previous counts. Eight out of ten of those who died had experienced academic, family or peer problems within a year before their deaths. Experts say pressures from school, home and social environments combine to increase risk, while early detection in schools remains weak.

Why it matters

Rising student suicides signal urgent gaps in mental-health support and school prevention systems.
