Student survey shows improved mental health and reduced loneliness since 2022

The latest Student Health and Well-being Survey indicates fewer students feel lonely and report lower levels of serious mental distress compared with the 2022 survey.

The Studentenes helse- og trivselundersøkelse (SHoT) released its newest findings, showing a clear downward trend in loneliness and serious mental health complaints among Norwegian students compared with the 2022 edition. Participation was broad, with tens of thousands of students completing the questionnaire. More than two-thirds of respondents now describe their life satisfaction as medium or higher, marking the best scores since the survey’s inception in 2010.

Education minister Eileen Fugelsnes praised the progress, attributing it to greater on-campus interaction and dedicated meeting places. Nevertheless, the report flags ongoing issues such as financial strain, discrimination, and sexual harassment, with gender differences evident in health complaints and substance use. A supplemental module revealed that 90 % of students used AI tools last semester, 81 % believe AI enhances learning, while 66 % express concerns about its negative effects.
