Students sue Torrey Pines High School over alleged retaliation for pro-Trump flyer

A federal lawsuit claims Torrey Pines High School officials punished two students for displaying pro-Trump material at an anti-ICE rally, leading to detention, a false police report and an overnight psychiatric hold.

In a federal filing, two students from Torrey Pines High School allege school officials retaliated after they presented a pro-Trump flyer at a Feb. 6 anti-ICE rally on campus. Student M.F. carried a handout depicting the letters of “LGBT” with images including a photo of Donald Trump, which a teacher reported, resulting in two days of detention for both students. Later, administrators alleged M.F. performed “disturbing searches” on a school computer for instructions on loading a Glock and disposing of a body, accusations he refutes, saying the computers were unsecured.

Police were summoned, denied parental access, and placed M.F. on an overnight 5150 psychiatric hold, also searching his home without finding evidence. The complaint says he was barred from varsity baseball, forced into counseling, and labeled an “LGBT bully,” asserting the district applies a double standard against conservative or pro-law-enforcement speech. The district declined comment, citing privacy and pending litigation.

Why it matters

It raises concerns about possible First-Amendment violations and unequal treatment of student political expression in schools.
