Study claims Apple News omitted DNC debt coverage before 2026 midterms

A Media Research Center analysis says Apple News did not feature any of the 78 stories about the Democratic National Committee’s mounting debt in its top-20 lineup from January through September.

Researchers from the Media Research Center examined Apple News’ daily top-20 selections from Jan. 1 to Sept. 28 and found that none of the 78 identified pieces on the Democratic National Committee’s debt were promoted. The DNC’s financial strain, highlighted by a $16 million shortfall blamed on the 2024 Biden-Harris campaign and a $1.5 billion loss from Kamala Harris’ presidential bid, left the party with about $17.5 million in debt entering 2026.

Apple News, with roughly 125 million monthly users, reportedly gave prominence to stories damaging to Republicans while sidelining coverage of the DNC’s woes. The analysis also points to earlier omissions of stories about Democratic Senate candidates Graham Platner and Abdul El-Sayed. Critics argue the platform’s human editors, unlike algorithmic rivals, may be shaping political narratives through selective promotion.

Why it matters

It highlights potential bias in a major news aggregator that could influence public awareness of party finances ahead of elections.
