Study Finds Chronic Pain Overlooked in U.S. Heat-Wave Safety Guidelines

Research linking temperature records to health data shows that extreme heat raises the risk of high-impact chronic pain, especially for older adults in rural and low-income areas.

Public-health researchers examined a 20-year cohort of over 35,000 adults aged 50 and older, aligning each participant’s chronic-pain reports with the historical temperature profile of their neighborhood. They defined high-impact chronic pain as lasting at least three months and limiting daily activities. The analysis revealed that repeated exposure to extreme cold raised pain incidence, but only sustained heat was linked to new high-impact pain among rural seniors and those with the lowest incomes.

Urban and wealthier older adults appeared protected, likely because of greater access to air-conditioning and health services. The study highlights that existing heat-mitigation tools—cooling centers, tree-planting, and urban-heat maps—are geared toward cities and miss rural challenges such as older housing stock and limited energy budgets. Researchers recommend adding chronic pain to heat-risk advisories, tailoring cooling assistance to rural needs, and recording patients’ housing and climate context in medical records.
