Study Finds Different Reef Materials Yield Similar Fish Communities in Miami

Researchers deployed twelve artificial reefs off Miami Beach in 1998 using limestone, concrete-gravel and concrete-tyre mix, and recorded nearly 98,000 fish of 146 species over three years.

In June 1998, scientists installed twelve artificial reefs off Miami Beach, arranging them in two parallel rows of six and using three construction types: limestone boulders, concrete-gravel tetrahedral modules, and concrete blended with waste tyre chips. Divers surveyed the sites every two months through February 2001, documenting fish species, counts, sizes and Panulirus argus lobster numbers. The study recorded 97,826 fish representing 146 species, but statistical analysis revealed no meaningful differences in overall fish abundance, biomass, or spiny lobster presence across the material groups.

Seasonal fluctuations dominated the observed changes, with summer peaks and winter lows. Comparisons with pre-deployment data and nearby hard-bottom habitats indicated that the artificial reefs boosted local fish abundance and species richness overall. The researchers concluded that while the material choice did not affect community metrics, artificial reefs themselves enhanced marine life in the area.
