Study Finds Flight Crew Face Highest Death Risk from Radiation-Linked Cancers

Research using over 12 million death certificates shows pilots and flight attendants have the greatest odds of dying from cancers linked to cosmic radiation.

A new study published in JAMA Internal Medicine examined death certificates for over 12 million individuals and identified airline pilots and flight attendants as having the highest proportion of deaths from radiation-associated cancers. Flight attendants showed roughly a 50% increase and pilots about a 36% increase in odds of dying from these cancers compared with the broader workforce, with about 1 in 14 flight-crew deaths attributable to such illnesses.

The research covered cancers linked to ionizing radiation, including leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, and several solid-tumor types, while finding no excess in cancers unrelated to radiation. Commentators highlighted that the findings support the hypothesis that occupational radiation exposure, not socioeconomic or lifestyle variables, drives the risk. The Federal Aviation Administration acknowledges exposure but does not set dose limits or require monitoring, prompting calls from the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA for better education and protection. Researchers suggest regular skin checks and earlier mammograms for female crew members, and advise clinicians to maintain heightened vigilance for cancer in this population.
