Study finds Hawaiian pilot whales consumed up to 12 pounds of plastic debris

A 13-year investigation of stranded short-finned pilot whales around Hawaii revealed that three adult males had each ingested as much as 12 pounds of synthetic waste, including tens of thousands of plastic pieces.

An extensive necropsy program of short-finned pilot whales stranded around the main Hawaiian Islands over 13 years showed that 23 percent had swallowed synthetic waste. Three adult males were found with between 6,283 and 35,543 pieces of plastic larger than 5 mm, totaling up to 12 pounds (5.4 kg) of debris in each stomach. The majority of the material was ghost gear—lost or discarded fishing lines, ropes and nets—while flexible plastic sheets such as carrier bags made up the next biggest portion.

Larger items over 200 mm accounted for more than 70 percent of the recovered weight. Although the whales were in normal condition at death, researchers cautioned that the bulk of plastic can displace food and release pollutants, potentially weakening immune function and affecting reproduction. The study, funded by the U.S. Pacific Fleet’s Environmental Readiness Division and NOAA Fisheries, underscores the need for stronger global action on fishing gear and single-use plastics.
