Study Finds Major U.S. Newspaper Underplayed Israeli Losses in Gaza Conflict
A new analysis of 1,559 articles says the newspaper’s early Gaza war coverage favored Palestinians by downplaying Israeli casualties and minimizing Hamas’s role.
Researchers examined 1,559 stories released from Oct. 7 2023 through June 7 2024 and concluded the outlet’s coverage systematically favored the Palestinian narrative. The study observed that Israeli military fatalities were largely excluded, whereas Palestinian civilian casualties were repeatedly emphasized, and Hamas’s ongoing attacks received little attention. It described a pattern where personal testimonies of Palestinian loss appeared roughly two out of every three days, while Israeli perspectives were rare.
The authors argue this framing casts Israel as the sole aggressor and Palestinians as passive victims. The newspaper rejected the findings, asserting it has reported the war from all angles and will not alter its coverage to suit entrenched views. Israeli officials report 437 soldiers killed, plus additional police and civilian deaths, while Gaza’s death toll exceeds 73,000 according to the Hamas-run health ministry.
