Study Finds Majority of Romanians Lack Financial Plans and End Month With Little Money
A new study on the Banometru financial-education program shows that six out of ten Romanians have no financial plan for the coming year and 44% finish the month with no savings left.
The Banometru study, conducted by researchers from the Institute for Quality of Life and Babeş-Bolyai University, indicates that a large share of Romanians lack a financial roadmap for the next year, with only 40% having one compared with 67% of those who finished the ten-year program. Daily budgeting is followed by 43% of the population, but 52% of former participants monitor their expenses. Long-term savings habits are present in 42% of the general public, yet 66% of Banometru alumni set aside money for future goals.
Nearly half of the alumni have enough reserves to cover three months of expenses, versus a quarter of those at the program’s start. Confidence in handling unexpected costs and having money left at month-end is also higher among alumni. Participants rate their own financial progress more positively than the broader population, reflecting the program’s impact since its launch in 2016.
Why it matters
The findings highlight gaps in financial literacy in Romania and the potential benefits of targeted education programs.
