Study finds meal timing may raise fracture risk in osteoporosis patients
New research links skipping breakfast and late-night dinners to a higher chance of bone fractures, especially among those with osteoporosis.
A recent study indicates that when people eat can affect bone health. Frequent breakfast omission was associated with higher cortisol levels, which may impair bone turnover, and reduced time for absorbing essential nutrients such as calcium and vitamin D. Likewise, consuming dinner within a short window before bedtime was found to disturb circadian rhythms, hindering bone regeneration and nutrient uptake. These timing issues were most evident in individuals diagnosed with osteoporosis.
Researchers recommend a regular, protein- and calcium-rich breakfast and finishing dinner at least three to four hours before sleep. They also stress the importance of avoiding smoking, staying active, and ensuring sufficient vitamin D intake for overall bone protection.
