Study Finds Menopause Does Not Trigger Overall Brain Gray Matter Loss

New research published in Nature Communications shows that, unlike puberty and pregnancy, the menopausal transition is not linked to a reduction in overall cortical gray matter volume.

Researchers have long documented brain remodeling during puberty and pregnancy, but little was known about menopause. A new study in Nature Communications examined cortical gray matter in women who were premenopausal, transitioning, or postmenopausal and observed no overall decline during the menopausal transition. This contrasts with earlier life stages, where hormonal shifts are tied to gray matter reduction.

Sophie van ’t Hof, a Ph.D. student at Amsterdam University Medical Center and first author, highlighted the novelty of assessing whole-brain changes at menopause. The authors acknowledge limitations, including reliance on participants' self-reported menopausal stage without hormonal verification, and note the findings do not fully align with prior work showing hippocampal shrinkage. They caution that it is premature to link these structural observations to cognitive function, calling for more detailed studies.
