Study Finds Mid-Level AI Adoption Boosts Productivity More Than Full Automation

ActivTrak’s Productivity Lab monitored 120,620 employees at 1,009 organizations over three consecutive quarters, categorizing AI use into three maturity stages: basic research assistance, task execution, and full workflow integration. About 27% of workers used AI for information lookup, 14% employed it to draft content and automate routine tasks, and merely 2% integrated AI deeply into daily processes. Productivity and work-health metrics improved as users moved from little to regular task-level AI use, peaking at roughly 75% healthy utilization, then declined modestly once AI was fully embedded.

The study warns that pushing for maximum AI maturity can inflate costs and create misaligned workflows without added benefit. Leaders are advised to match AI tools to specific tasks and focus on the middle maturity stage for most organizations.
