Study Finds Phones Loaded with Thousands of Germs and Shows How to Clean Them Safely

Research by Lotti Tajouri revealed that most smartphones harbor tens of thousands of microbes, including antibiotic-resistant strains, and experts advise regular, gentle cleaning to reduce infection risk.

A survey of 95 mobile phones conducted by associate professor Lotti Tajouri of Bond University and Murdoch University uncovered more than 17,000 bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites, including super-bugs and antibiotic-resistance genes. The warm, damp surfaces of phones act as ideal habitats, especially as 80% of users admit to handling their devices in public restrooms, which can spread microbes to the eyes, nose and mouth up to 25 times per hour.

Immunocompromised individuals are particularly vulnerable. Technology expert Meena Jha of Central Queensland University advises unplugging devices, removing cases, and wiping with a damp microfiber cloth; for disinfection, 70% isopropyl alcohol wipes may be used sparingly, while avoiding bleach, vinegar or hydrogen peroxide that can damage the oleophobic coating. A weekly cleaning routine is suggested, with increased frequency for those working in hospitals. Tajouri also recommends closing toilet lids before flushing and steering clear of hand dryers to limit aerosolized germs.
