Study finds snapping photos can actually weaken memory recall

Researchers at Binghamton University discovered that taking screenshots or photos reduces the ability to remember the captured information compared with simply viewing it.

A recent investigation by scholars at Binghamton University introduced the term “photo-taking impairment effect,” describing how capturing a picture or screenshot can impair later recall of the material. In experiments, students viewed various artworks and were instructed to screenshot some; later, they struggled to identify those images, often recalling non-screenshot items better. The phenomenon appeared despite participants being aware that the screenshots would be erased, indicating that the act of recording itself diverts cognitive resources.

The researchers propose three overlapping explanations: the split of attention during capture, reliance on external storage (cognitive offloading), and a subconscious detachment from the experience. To improve memory, the authors advise manual note-taking, which forces deeper processing of the information. The findings challenge the common habit of hoarding digital images as memory aids.
