Study finds weight-loss hormone shields liver from inflammation without dieting
Researchers at McMaster University discovered that the hormone GDF15 can curb liver inflammation and fibrosis through a brain-to-liver pathway, even when it does not cause weight loss.
In experiments replicating human MASH, McMaster scientists demonstrated that GDF15 activates a previously unknown circuit linking the brain to the liver, prompting glucocorticoid release that suppresses hepatic inflammation and slows scar tissue formation. The hormone’s benefits were observed regardless of appetite suppression, weight reduction, or liver-fat alterations. Lead author Dongdong Wang described the process as reprogramming liver cells toward a less inflammatory state.
Co-author Gregory Steinberg emphasized that the discovery expands the hormone’s known role beyond appetite control, offering a potential target for future drugs aimed at liver injury. The study, published in Cell Metabolism on August 10, 2026, was supported by Canadian research agencies and Novo Nordisk, which supplied the GDF15 used in the work.
