Study finds X's Community Notes missed most false election claims

A recent analysis shows that X's crowdsourced fact-checking tool failed to label the majority of misleading posts about the U.S. midterm elections.

NewsGuard’s review of X revealed that the platform’s Community Notes system did not flag 93.1% of posts containing false claims about the U.S. midterm elections. Only 13 of the identified misleading posts were annotated with corrective notes, allowing the rest to generate millions of engagements ahead of the November 3 election. Examples of the misinformation included a conservative commentator’s assertion that New York and California had banned voter ID, a claim that is inaccurate.

Elon Musk, a vocal supporter of Community Notes, posted at least four false election-related statements that also lacked any corrective notes. While Community Notes has shown success in other areas such as vaccine misinformation, experts warn it works best when there is broad consensus on the facts. X did not respond to requests for comment.

Why it matters

The findings raise doubts about the effectiveness of X's user-driven fact-checking ahead of a major election.
