Study links birdsong pleasantness to pitch, bandwidth and complexity in German species

German researchers had volunteers rate 123 bird recordings and found that higher pitch, narrower bandwidth and greater complexity made songs sound more pleasant, with blackbirds ranking highest and barn owls lowest.

A research team from the University of Tübingen investigated why certain birdsongs are perceived as more enjoyable. Eighty-four volunteers evaluated 123 recordings of wild birds found throughout Germany on a five-point pleasantness scale. The scientists measured acoustic properties such as frequency, amplitude, bandwidth and song complexity and correlated them with the listeners' scores.

They discovered that higher pitch, moderate amplitude, narrower bandwidth and greater melodic complexity increased pleasantness, while familiarity with birds had no effect. Blackbirds received the top pleasantness scores, while barn owl calls were rated the poorest. The authors suggest humans may be evolutionarily attuned to variable, moderate-intensity sounds that indicate a safe, thriving habitat. Future studies will broaden the sample across cultures and examine real-world impacts on wellbeing.
