Study links email spam filters to $117 million loss in GOP fundraising
Research shows Gmail, Outlook and Yahoo spam filters blocked GOP fundraising emails, costing an estimated $117 million in first-time donations.
A study by researchers from the University of Iowa and the University of Alabama traced two intervals in the prior year when spam filters on Gmail, Microsoft Outlook and Yahoo flagged WinRed fundraising emails as junk, causing a 75 % drop in first-time donations overall and an 83 % plunge during Outlook’s February-April window. The authors associate the shortfall with 142,126 absent contributions, which they value at roughly $117 million, a notable portion of the $377 million raised by the Republican National Committee, NRCC and NRSC in 2025.
Google’s spokesperson called the methodology deeply flawed and said its spam protections are applied uniformly. Microsoft declined to comment and Yahoo did not respond. In August, Google introduced a “verified sender” program allowing political campaigns to bypass spam filters if they meet policy standards.
Why it matters
Email filtering practices may have diverted millions from GOP campaigns, raising concerns about platform transparency and political fundraising equity.
