Study links Hamilton's falling soot to coal-burning emissions

Researchers from McMaster University found that the black residue settling on homes in Hamilton contains toxic chemicals typical of coal combustion.

McMaster University scientists, working with Environment Hamilton, examined soot that has long plagued neighborhoods near Hamilton’s industrial district. Over several months, volunteers gathered samples from 50 homes, which were later tested for dust, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and other toxic compounds. Results showed that locations closer to the northeast industrial area received more dust and higher PAH concentrations, especially during winter months.

The researchers traced the chemical signatures to coal combustion, though they acknowledged limited resources prevented a full source inventory. Ministry spokesperson Alexandru Cioban said provincial testing is ongoing, but the university’s findings contradict earlier claims that road dust is the primary component. The team plans a community briefing on Aug. 20 and aims to expand the study to 200 participants.
