Study links higher microplastic levels to lung cancer patients in Greece
Researchers found that lung cancer patients in Greece have about 20% more microplastics in their lung fluid than individuals without the disease.
Scientists analyzing lung fluid from 50 lung-cancer patients in Greece reported a 20% higher concentration of microplastics than in samples from non-cancer individuals, according to a European Respiratory Society study. The particles, which originate from degraded plastic waste, have been detected in air, oceans and even human placenta, underscoring their pervasive presence. Respiratory physician Ilias Dimeas said the findings suggest inhaled microplastics may be more prevalent in lungs than previously recognized, potentially contributing to inflammation linked to cancer.
Other researchers, such as Keshav Raj Paudel, have noted similar microplastic accumulation in tumor tissue, while Thejus Jayakrishnan emphasized that current evidence does not yet prove a causal relationship. The study adds to growing concerns that reducing environmental plastic pollution could benefit human health beyond ecological effects.
