Study links rapid Himalayan glacier loss to black carbon emissions
A new study finds Himalayan glaciers are melting 65% faster than a decade ago, with black carbon responsible for about a third of the melt.
A collaborative study by Systemiq, the Integrated Mountain Initiative, ICIMOD and the GB Pant National Institute of Himalayan Environment reveals that glaciers in one outlet Kush Himalayas are losing mass 65% faster than they were ten years ago. Approximately one-third of this accelerated melt is driven by black carbon, largely emitted by brick kilns in the surrounding plains. The researchers caution that, if current trends continue, the region could lose up to 80% of its glacier volume by the end of the century and that most river basins will reach peak water flow by mid-century.
Monitoring remains severely inadequate, with only about 0.1% of the estimated 40,000 glaciers under observation. The findings come after a recent glacial collapse in Nepal that triggered flash floods, killing at least 1,350 people and leaving hundreds missing. The report calls for expanded monitoring, early-warning systems, and aggressive reduction of soot emissions to mitigate future hazards.
