Study links rising marine heatwaves to higher child deaths and stunting in poorer nations
Researchers found that more frequent marine heatwaves are associated with increased child mortality and stunting in low- and middle-income countries.
A group of social and marine scientists analyzed health records from low- and middle-income countries and identified a clear correlation between the frequency of marine heatwaves and worsening child health outcomes. Over a two-year period, each standard-deviation increase in heatwave events was linked to higher child mortality and greater rates of stunting, with child wasting also increasing. The study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, acknowledges that the exact pathways remain uncertain, citing potential disruptions to fish and shellfish populations as well as broader climate impacts such as terrestrial heatwaves and disease spread.
Lead researcher Clark Gray emphasized that the findings align with broader evidence of climate change’s negative health effects. Co-author Katy Seto highlighted the work as an initial step toward identifying vulnerable populations and shaping future research directions.
