Study links wine consumption to lower mortality while beer and spirits raise risk
Research using UK Biobank data found that moderate wine drinking was associated with reduced death risk, whereas beer, cider and spirits were linked to higher mortality.
A recent investigation of UK Biobank participants, followed for more than a decade, compared mortality outcomes across different alcoholic beverages. Heavy drinking, defined as over 40 grams per day for men and over 20 grams for women, was linked to a 24% rise in all-cause death, a 36% increase in cancer death and a 14% rise in cardiovascular death versus occasional drinkers. Among low to moderate consumers, wine consumption correlated with a 21% lower risk of cardiovascular death, while comparable intake of beer, cider or spirits was associated with a modest increase in heart-related mortality.
Researchers suggested that compounds like polyphenols in wine might confer vascular benefits. Experts cautioned that the observational design cannot prove causation and highlighted the need for randomized trials. Limitations include reliance on baseline self-reports and a participant pool that may be healthier than the general population.
