Study Reveals 1820 Mallorcan Plague Was Lethal Pneumonic Outbreak Contained by Quarantine
Analysis of two-century-old records shows the 1820 Mallorca epidemic was a highly fatal pneumonic plague, and strict isolation limited its spread.
A multidisciplinary team uncovered daily health bulletins from 1820 that document Mallorca’s last major plague, revealing a summer mortality of one in three residents. Applying modern epidemiological methods, they estimated a case-fatality rate of 78 % and an R0 of 1.3 in Son Servera, indicating that pneumonic and septicemic plague, rather than bubonic, caused the high death toll. The disease likely arrived via an illegal landing near Son Servera, with a crew from Tangier infecting locals, contradicting the legend of a shepherd as patient zero.
In reaction, officials instituted a triple cordon sanitaire—separating towns, isolating the sick, and enforcing a naval blockade—which confined deaths to the island’s eastern tip while sparing over 40 other towns. The findings, appearing in PNAS, highlight the effectiveness of early containment measures before antibiotics existed and offer insights for modern public-health strategies.
