Study reveals widespread childhood physical and sexual abuse among women in Italy

A new report shows that a significant share of Italian women and foreign residents experienced physical or sexual violence before turning 16.

The latest report on violence against women, titled “Violence against women, from childhood to adulthood - Year 2025,” surveyed women aged 16 to 75 from March 2025 to January 2026. It indicates that a notable proportion of both Italian women and foreign residents suffered physical or sexual abuse before age 16, with sexual abuse reported more frequently by Italians. Most incidents involved known persons, often family members or friends, and the first sexual abuse episode can occur before age six.

Over half of the victims said they never spoke about the abuse, and few sought help from authorities or schools. Senators and civic leaders have urged the introduction of comprehensive sexual and affective education throughout the education system. The findings also highlight intergenerational patterns of violence and the need for cultural change.
