Study Shows Frontoparietal Cortex Reconfigures Connections During Uncertain Decisions
University of Iowa researchers discovered that the brain's frontoparietal hub dynamically alters its communication patterns when faced with uncertainty.
A University of Iowa team combined brain imaging with computational modeling to examine how the frontoparietal cortex manages uncertain decision making. Their experiments required participants to learn color-face-scene pairings, then adjust when those pairings changed, introducing ambiguity. Results showed the hub does not maintain fixed connections; instead, it reconfigures its links to other brain areas in real time, selecting the most relevant signals for each decision phase.
Lead author Kai Hwang described the system as an “air-traffic controller” that filters and prioritizes incoming information. The research, published in the Journal of Neuroscience, suggests that atypical connectivity patterns could underlie conditions like ADHD and schizophrenia. Funding came from the National Institute of Mental Health and the Iowa Neuroscience Institute.
